The Body Scoop for Girls

This book is actually for parents with tween or teen girls.  I had my reservations of posting it but my heart says it might help other parents like me.

I saw this on Today show.  The author, Dr. Jennifer Ashton, is an Ob-Gynecologist.  She interviewed teenage girls.  The interview was about personal hygiene and the importance of going to an Ob-Gyn for their health and well-being. 

The girls were open to Dr. Ashton.  Honestly, I'm stunned by their answers.  It was quite an awakening.  One girl said that most of the girls she knew in school are involve in sexual activities.  And they don't have the right idea about menstrual cycle, breast and bone health, or protection from diseases and pregnancy.

I have two young girls and I'm anticipating for challenges I'll be facing in raising them when they're teenagers.  I'm a conservative parent and practicing Christian and family values are very important for me.  Times are changing.  I'd like to protect them from getting hurt due to high-risk adolescent behaviors, by providing them facts.   Most teens really get the wrong information from their peers.  These are mostly myths and hearsays.  And it's scary.

As parents, we are responsible in teaching our children how to respect their self as a person, how to understand their changing body and how to take care of their health and well being.  We can do it by communicating with them in a non-threatening way and with respect.  It's not easy to have a conversation of this subject with a teenager.  And I'm not sure if these are taught in school.  But I really think that this book will help a lot.  It offers a lot of helpful information.  It's better to get the right information from you and the book than from somewhere else.

Little Quack's Hide and Seek

My toddler likes this book so much because it's a hide-and-seek book.  She giggles alot when Mama Duck starts looking for Little Quack.

The book is about a mother duck and her five ducklings playing hide-and-seek.  The four ducklings found a hiding place but Little Quack.  Little Quack is a resourceful duckling.  He found the best hiding place!  Find out where it is.

Little Quack's book is not only a cute and funny story but it also teaches simple arithmetic.  Mama Duck counts one to ten.  While she counts, there is a "Quack-u-lator at the bottom of every page.  It's basic subtraction of numbers that coincides with the number of ducks left in the illustration. 

Little Quack's Hide and Seek is written by Lauren Thompson and illustrated by Derek Anderson.

The Christian Mother Goose BOOK of NURSERY RHYMES

My husband bought this book, The Christian Mother Goose, for our kids.  Our kids love this big book.  Instead of reading it, we are singing the words to the tune of familiar nursery rhymes like Twinkle, Twinkle.  I think this is a brilliant idea of teaching kids about Jesus and God's grace.  Children can easily understand it because of the simple words.  Best of all, the kids can easily remember it because these are familiar songs.

One of my favorites is the Jack and Jill.  The lyrics go like this:

Janck and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water.
A man there said, "If you drink this, You'll still be thirsty after."

"But there is water Jesus gives, so won't you ask Him first,
to give you Living Water so that you will never thirst."

Up Jack got and home did trot, a whole mile and a quarter,
To tell the Good News to his friends, about God's Living Water.

The book is written by Marjorie Ainsborough Decker and illustrated by Sarah Gibb.

Bertie at Bedtime

Like for most kids, bedtime for our kids takes time.  They have so much energy and they want to play more.  Bertie at Bedtime is a helpful book.  Kids will learn that they are like Bertie.  Bertie has bedtime rituals too.  There's the bathing, toothbrushing, racing, chasing, reading and singing.  Parents will nod and kids will laugh when you read Bertie at Bedtime story.

This book is written by Marcus Pfister, the creator of The Rainbow Fish.  The Rainbow Fish was an international phenomenon with millions of fans.  Marcus was born in Berne, Switzerland.  He traveled throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico.  He worked as a painter, sculptor, graphic designer, writer and illustrator of many children's books.  He lives in Berne with his family.

Richard Scarry's Please and Thank You

Richard Scarry's Please and Thank You book contains simple words and simple stories but very rich in words that teach children good manners and right conduct.  Lowly, the worm, together with other young animals learn them while they eat, play, study and celebrate.

Some of the good manners that are featured in the book aside from saying excuse me, please, thank you are brushing teeth, helping, eating with fork not with fingers, chewing food properly, cleaning up, sharing, being polite, among others.

There are five short, funny and playful stories in this book.  Richard Scarry made it easy for kids to learn good manners in his book.

Sharing, Now I am Big

Sharing (Now I Am Big) is a book for 3 to 6 year olds.  It's part of a series of books that promotes family values.  The fraternal twins in this book show the things that they share.  They share their toys, chair, time with mother, playing with father, ice cream, fruits and even their friends.

Sharing has bright illustrations and contains simple words that encourage word recognition.  The book is illustrated by Stephanie Longfoot.

Frosty the Snowman

Frosty the snowman was a jolly, happy soul,
With a corncob pipe and a button nose
and two eyes made out of coal.

Frosty the Snowman is a book with a melody.  You can hear it when you open the cover.  You can sing along with it.  It's a jolly book with jolly lyrics.  It's fun to read or sing it with kids during Christmas season. 

The book is written by Jack Rollins and Steve Nelson.  It's illustrated by Rebecca Thornburgh.
